If you have space in your city backyard, and city regulations allow, build your chicken coop a little larger than your original plan. This will allow extra space for your chickens and if you decide to expand your chicken family you will have the space.

Keep in mind when choosing lumber, sometimes one piece of lumber can be cut to create two pieces that will fit the measurements in your plan. They can be cut into equal lengths or be cut into different lengths to fit specific requirements. Also, if there are small cracks in the wood, no need to worry as they are dry and will not split like new wood. Don’t forget to check out your recycled or used stores for wood, as this will ease up your budget.

When you have all your materials ready, you will find out that building a backyard chicken coop in your city backyard, can be fun and will be a great bargain especially when your hens start laying their eggs.

When choosing a backyard chicken coop plan in an urban area, your first decision should be how many chickens you are allowed to have on your premises. This will greatly assist you in determining the size of the chicken coop you will build.

There are many plans available on the internet which can show you how simple or how intricate to build a backyard chicken coop. When deciding on a chicken coop plan, think of the comfort of your chicken, ease of keeping the chicken coop clean and placement of the chicken coop in your urban backyard.

Remember, your choice of plan may look pretty, but it should be suitable for your climate and your background environment. If you live in a cold climate, your backyard chicken coop should be properly enclosed for warmth. If you live in warm climate, it should be properly ventilated to allow air to circulate to keep the chicken coop cool.

Lastly, keep in mind that building your backyard chicken coop, does not have to be difficult or expensive. The plans listed on this page, allow for easy building and comfort on your wallet.

This past weekend, I was talking with a friend about my website, how to build a backyard chicken coop, and he asked if I had built a chicken coop yet. My answer was “in the planning process.”

I have purchased a set of downloadable plans on how to build a backyard chicken coop and I was pleasantly surprised how easy it will be to build a chicken coop. I am by no means a carpenter or for that matter have built any wooden projects without assistance. However, with these plans I can see that following the steps will enable me to build my first chicken coop.

So my friend then asked, “why are you passionate about building a backyard chicken coop?” At first, I thought about the prospect of having chickens as pets, but that’s not my real passion. Instead, my passion is in sustainable agriculture.

With building a chicken coop and having hens in our backyards, we are now taking control of what we consume and put into our bodies. There are so many unhealthy practices when producing foods for humans to eat, that having your own chicken coop and hens allows a person to enjoy the benefits of sustainable agriculture.

Research your local city by-laws/regulations to find out if you can build a backyard chicken coop and house a few hens. The benefits to you and your family’s health are insurmountable.

Building a backyard chicken coop in a city or small town can be an attractive and affordable project, which will deliver fresh eggs every day.

The first thing to do for your backyard chicken coop project is decide how many chickens you are allowed to have as pets. (Check your city by-laws for the allowance of chickens in your backyard). The size of the chicken coop will depend on the number of chickens and what type of materials will be needed for you to build a backyard chicken coop in your city or small town.

Next, survey your location to find out if there will be enough space for your chicken coop. Chicken coops can be portable, semi-permanent or permanent. It is easy to build a backyard chicken coop if you plan for it thoroughly. For example, if you have little space, you will have to adjust the size of your chicken coop and reduce the number of chickens you will keep.

Aside from the suitable design for your project, you have to take into consideration what type of feeder and water system you will build into your backyard chicken coop. The next thing to consider is the construction of the nest boxes inside the chicken coop. The hens must be provided with a level of comfort and hygiene, because the eggs they lay must be free from dirt and bacterial contamination.

Also, your backyard chicken coop should be located in an area where there is sufficient sunlight, and not in a very windy location. Predators lurking in the area should also be considered and precautionary measures like enclosures and openings should be checked.

There are second hand stores that may carry the materials you will need for your chicken coop. Check your backyard chicken coop plan and write down the list of materials you need. Take note of possible material substitutions, so you can save money in constructing your chicken coop.

Remember that if you planned for four chickens in your backyard chicken coop, you might want to add more chickens in the future; so your construction will have to be bigger, or adjustable for future expansion. Foresight and future planning will save you money and a lot of trouble later on.

Chickens are increasingly becoming desired pets of city dwellers due to the fact of fresh eggs, free fertilizer and are fun for children. What’s better than having a fresh omelet loaded with protein to start out your day!

Chickens are a great sustainable pet and if your city or small town regulations allow you to have them in your backyard, then undoubtedly you will be contemplating on how to build a backyard chicken coop. There are various chicken coop designs on the internet that will give you fantastic and spectacular ideas on how to build a backyard chicken coop, but the best designs are the uncomplicated and straightforward plans.

Here are some tips to consider on how to build a backyard chicken coop:

When you build a backyard chicken coop, keep in mind a few basic measurements which will be required for your backyard chicken coop. The doors of the chicken coop need only be one square foot, but there is no rule against bigger doors. Nesting boxes can be one cubic feet with a one foot opening in front. A good tip is to build the coop with a slight slope as this will aid in the cleaning of your backyard chicken coop.

Most of the designs for backyard chicken coops integrate an outdoor run so your chicken family can get some fresh air and sunshine. Ensure you have an enclosed chicken run so that your chicken family is protected from predators. Another tip when thinking about how to build a backyard chicken coop – construct your chicken coop a foot or so off the ground. This will allow for good ventilation and if you live in an area that is prone to flash floods or quick snow melts, this may benefit your chicken coop from flooding.

Also, something to note: Chickens raised in backyard cities and small towns are different then chickens raised on farms and that’s the cleaning of the coops. The farm chicken manure can be allowed to accumulate and be mucked out when there is enough to be used as fertilizer in the surrounding fields. Suburban chicken coops have to be cleaned out frequently, but you have to make provision for their disposal. In the city, you can’t leave the coop unattended for days because accumulation of waste and droppings will smell and attract unwanted complaints from neighbours. Thus, this will prompt a possible notice from by-law or environmental officers, which could mean an eviction notice of your newfound chicken family. So always ensure your backyard chicken coop is cleaned regularly.

Most of all – have fun with your chicken family and in designing your chicken coop. Remember, even though your chickens live in a box, doesn’t mean you have to think inside the box. Be creative – Happy chickens are happy egg producing chickens!
